Tavi Gevinson and Iris Apfel on Why You Shouldn't Give A Shit

Yesterday afternoon Tavi Gevinson, editor of RookieMag.com (age 16), and style icon Iris Apfel (age 90) had a discussion at the Met. Moderated by New Yorker writer Judith Thurman, they rapped about what it means to be chic today. But if you came to get style tips then you came to the wrong place. The discussion instead turned inward even, dare I say, feminist  (although Apfel claimed much of feminist theory to be 'bunk', I would pin her as a feminist positively). In a refreshing change of pace from the typical fashion dialogue their discussion revolved around empowerment and the power of fantasy, highlighting the importance (and challenges) of digging deep into oneself in search of personal style. Apfel likened the process to as difficult and self revealing an experience as a session on the psychologist's couch.

In terms of her own style Iris said, "I put together everything in a gigantic rush...I am the world's oldest living teenager." She also said that since she's a self-proclaimed "accessories freak", she relies on architectural clothes that can be embellished. While Tavi described her outfit planning process as more cerebral - her pieces often selected and put together for individual significance, in a collage sort of way.  Both women expressed sadness at fashion being a form of stress and disparaged  'rules'  laid out by women's magazines. Apfel said, "Dressing is great fun and when the fun goes out of it you might as well be dead." Hear, hear! She also said that she learned a long time ago "if someone doesn't like how I put myself together it's their problem, not mine." THANK YOU IRIS!

Iris and Tavi both agreed that ageism is a horrific epidemic, seen even more in the beauty world than in fashion.  But Apfel noted the fact she was asked to speak yesterday, was recently part of a wildly successful MAC campaign, and is 90 years old and just now getting tremendous accolades, as proof of a significant cultural shift. Women are yearning to be relevant no matter what their age. (I'd even add that it is our social responsibility to fight ageism by celebrating ourselves, and our beauty, no matter our age.)

Most of all I learned something I've always kind of known but these two woman put especially well...

How to not give a shit about what other people think about you and/or how you dress:

TG: "The fact that something appeals to you and you're drawn to it. That should be enough."

IA: "The fashion police aren't going to take you away and, if they do, you might have some fun in jail."

TG: "Confidence came after I started forcing myself to wear things I was shy about."

IA: "In the '40's I was probably the first woman to wear jeans. I'm not a rebel. I don't do things or not because I'm trying to be rebellious. But I don't live to be trendy. You can't live to be trendy and live to have personal style. Nobody can wear everything."

TG: "I just try to stay busy so I don't have time to care about what people think..And then I ended up finding similar like-minded weirdos."

IA: "If someone doesn't like how I put myself together it's their problem, not mine."

All this said, it's still nice to get a little approval. Iris pointed at me and said she liked my outfit (goes well with the hot dog truck, right?)

I can die happy.

I Die Friday : Sculptures for the Home

Some goodies for your ocular enjoyment to send you off on this long weekend!  At the start of the month I  moved into my first apartment solo in NYC! For those of you non-NYCers- this is HUGE. Living alone in this city, if you don't come from oil money, is kind of like finding a decent dude: not impossible but the chances are very slim and you might be closer to 40 when it happens. So I'm ecstatic about landing a Greenpoint studio for an unGODLY reasonable price. I've been obsessing about interior design for about three weeks straight. Much more capable and interested in dressing people but, for the first time ever, I have an interest in interior spaces. I've always felt a little aspergers-y when it comes to interior decorating, not knowing when and where is right or enough, but I'm committed to learning and I'm having fun doing it. Midcentury modern furniture is turning out to be my weakness and someone might have to hold me back from purchasing the above $825 Michael Rosenberg Skyscraper Table. Straight jacket hold me back.

Side note. I was at TJ Maxx this week because, let's be honest, they sometimes  have some amazing steals. And I found this:

Have a great weekend!!!

XOXO

Hats Are Hard

Siwy Rio, $159

The Cold Hard Truth is hats are hard to pull off. Mostly because, if you wear a hat in 2012 America,  people WILL judge you. To break it down: people judge you a lot but if you wear a hat they will judge you more. This brings me to my final point - FEDORAS SUCK. I know this point has been made quite a bit but I still see them too much. Seriously just don't do it.  Fedoras had a moment, for one month - it was Brooklyn circa summer  2008 when MGMT played Metropolitan Pool. Then the moment died of diabetus and the ashes were scattered into the wind. Unfortunately those ashes landed in Midtown and were swallowed by people who would eventually occupy overpriced Williamsburg high rises and clog the L train stairs. Besides fedoras, these Midtown transplants would also bring with them flip flops, polo shirts, and maxi dresses while systematically turning Bedford Avenue into St. Marks place.

But I'm not judging.

Anyways. Clothes. Above are a few great summer options to wear with the Reiss Ava wide brim hat I put on yesterday and walked out of Bloomingdale's wearing -- I did pay for it, reluctantly. Hats are SO risky they really should be free, right? But I liked this hat. We got along. And I think it fit my coloring and features well? Plus the sales girl told me I looked beautiful. I'm sure she really meant it and was not concerned about commission. Finally, this hat is not a Fedora.

I think this hat will go well with light colored boyfriend shirts and denim shorts this summer. I love these Siwy Rio shorts- I wore a lot of denim diapers last summer (shorts so tiny your ass sticks out) and I'm feeling a tad more modest lately. These Siwy shorts are a really nice fresh take and prevent overexposure. Equipment button downs are my jam. They are kinda pricy but so perfect 100% of the time.

I'll leave you lovely people on this note: wide brims, wide brims, wide brims FEDORAS, FEDORAS, FEDORAS. In this context 'wide brim' is not a sexual term, it is the only kind of hat acceptable this summer.

Stay chic HUNNNTY (as my friend, the beautiful Marty Harper would say).

#FierceTribalGlam: Madonna for 2012

I must be in a dark mood today but I want nothing more than to slap on these three items, stand on a street corner, chain smoke, and stare at everyone with a really judgy, raccoon eyelined stink eye. Nice shoes,  I call this look #FierceTribalGlam.

If a cool young Modonna stepped into 2012 and became cool and young again, she would wear this. Is it sacrilege to talk about Modonna that way? Probably. But I think her rebellious fuck you spirit wouldn't really care what I had to say. She might even agree!

Looks Like Floral Prints Aren't Going Anywhere

A few years ago I thought that the floral print trend was just a fad: here today, gone tomorrow. But each spring florals seems to be returning with more momentum. And wowser designers are doing some cool stuff with these happy patterns. I love this Built By Wendy sweater. Wouldn't it be just great to pair this with these Cheap Monday jeans and some white Keds? Yay! Spring!

Loafers are a Great Alternative to Prissy Ballerina Flats

Ballerina flats are kind of prissy but they're so comfortable and practical. If you live in a walking city it would behoove you  to invest in a pair (pun intended). It took me a few years to get on the ballerina train but last spring I finally bought a black pair leather pair, with snake skin textured toe caps (from Banana Republic, shhhhh don't tell anyone they were really cool I swear leave me alone). I haven't taken them off in months. The front soles have separated from the bottoms and it looks like I'm walking around in shoes with flapping rubber Muppet tongues. I tried to super glue them back together. I REALLY DID. But alas, it's time to buy another pair of flats. It's not that I'm cheap, I just haven't been able to find ones that were un-prissy enough for my taste. But search no more. Finally there's a great UN-prissy alternative to the flat- ladies meet THE LOAFER. I really wanted the Loeffler Randall ones in this post but apparently so did bixches everywhere because they're totes sold out. I liked that they were covered in tasteful silver studs, adding edge but not over the top. I've found other loafers with studs but they always seem to be way too garish. To clarify- it's not that I think the  loafer is a new concept, I don't live in a cave, but they are finally on trend. They offer up a great alternative those of us who find ballerina flats insulting to our edgier senses of self. I love these DolceVita Loafers above sold at Urban Outfitters because they are simple, have a wooden sole with a rubber bottom so you won't fall on your ass, and they are straightforwardly awesome. I want to get all three shades but that would be greedy so I settled on the practical black. I am practical, if anything, at heart. At $79 they are a much more attractive in price alternative to the Loeffler Randall studded loafers I still have wet dreams about.  Sigh. One day.

Muubaa Does Leather Like Woah

Muubaa is my go-to company for edgy leather garments. They're always on the forefront of innovative leather treatment techniques, the silhouettes they come up with are outstanding and the prices are more than reasonable.  Leather shorts, jackets, dresses - you name it, they do it. And they do it good. This little number, the Delaney, is laser cut so what you wear underneath (or don't wear, who knows, go on with your bad self!?) changes how the jacket looks. Luv.
